Steve Jarvis is an artist, educator and bicycle frame builder
Starting my MFA studies a week after 9/11/01, I sensed that something had changed about the world. I spent the follow 2 years of study and 12 years of studio production creating work that focused on preparation for Potential Inevitability, creating works that focused on the basics of survival using common, readily available materials and processes.
At some point in 2017 or 2018, I realized that the “get busy living or get busy dying” worldview referenced in the film Shawshank Redemption was calling me to change direction in my practice ultimately bringing me to bicycle frame design and construction. As a result my production process was forced to become much more precise.
